If you play 40K, Age of Sigmar, or Kill Team, you’ve probably noticed how much good terrain affects the feel of a game. At Gorgon Games, we believe terrain isn’t just something to hide behind, it should look great on the table and feel like part of the world you’re playing in.
When we looked around at terrain options, though, we kept running into the same problem. A lot of the affordable stuff does the job but doesn’t look great, and a lot of the really nice terrain is eye-wateringly expensive. Not much in between.
That’s what led us to start Talos Terrain.
By designing our own terrain and 3D-printing it here in Auckland, we can keep quality high without pushing prices into “special occasion only” territory. Making it here in NZ is also better for the environment - something we’re always on board with.
Why 3D Printing?
I first got into 3D printing because I wanted to print my own miniatures. I started out with an SLA printer from Anycubic and used a few third-party design platforms (like Hero Forge) to get things going. Before long, I wanted a bit more control over what I was making, so I started learning Blender and designing my own models.
When we started thinking about terrain, an FDM printer made more sense – it’s faster and better suited to larger parts. We landed on a Bambu Lab H2D and started figuring out how to make this work inside the shop. FDM printing itself was a learning process. 😅
The Maker Space
We DIYed a “mezzanine” in the shop to become the maker space. Literally, my brother and I picked up a bunch of timber from Mitre 10 and knocked it out in a weekend. I’m still trying to get rid of all the sawdust.
The climb up is a bit “character building” but once you’re up, it does the job.

One does not simply walk to the maker space
Right now, I’m planning each terrain set carefully and testing the prints for quality. We’ve just put our first sci-fi containers and crates set live, and that’s the starting point. From here, we’ll be expanding into more sci-fi pieces and fantasy terrain as well.
What’s Next for Talos Terrain?
The aim is to build a solid, well-curated terrain range for wargaming, and over time expand into more complete and immersive setups for RPG campaigns like Dungeons & Dragons, Draw Steel, and Daggerheart.
We’re taking this one step at a time, and look forward to sharing more soon!
